Gorilla Gathering message for the week.
Responsibility. . . . .I can hear the groan from here.🤣 Any time someone starts talking about responsibility, the listener groans. We, as humans, associate responsibility with just another thing that we HAVE to do or take care of. One more thing to take up our time and effort.
I would argue that we are looking at responsibility all wrong. Responsibility is what gives our lives purpose and meaning. Responsibility is our reason to get out of bed. Our reason to strive for better things.
Winston Churchill said, "The price of greatness is responsibility."
Those things we are responsible for are blessings. They are the things that give us purpose, hope, and joy.
I told our students and staff this morning that each one of us can do SOMETHING to be more responsible. Our young ones can ask to be responsible for something simple like doing the dishes, or picking up toys, or feeding a pet. Even the adults in the room can be more responsible. They can join an organization. If they are already in several organizations, they can consider taking a leadership role like secretary or treasurer or even president.
This week I want each of us to find a way to take a little more responsibility upon ourselves. If you aren't a part of any organizations, I would encourage you to join one! We have a TON of worthy organizations in our little community doing great things for our town. If you need ideas, please reach out!
Responsibility is not the enemy. There is freedom in the discipline it takes to be responsible for things! It pushes us to do better; to BE better!
Challenge for the week: take on a new responsibility.
Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Have a responsible week!

My name is Mark, and I'm a Christmas junkie. The first step is admitting I have a problem.
I LOVE the holidays. I like every single part of it. The family, the food, the gift giving, the music, the snow. . . .ALL of it. I look forward to the traditions. I love the traditional Thanksgiving foods; the turkey, the stuffing, the gravy, etc. I start listening to Christmas music by mid-October at the latest. (Sorry Scrooges) Our family always has Pizza Hut pizza on Christmas Eve after our church Christmas program, and I look forward to that.
But the part of the holidays that makes them so magical is the people. Growing up, my grandma would come and open gifts with us and make her rounds to the other cousins' houses. My siblings and I would play with our new presents together on Christmas day. Everything smelled like peppermint and turkey and joy!
Now, I get to watch my kids open gifts and see the joy in their faces. I get to be the dad with the pocket knife and the bag of trash as people open gifts. Christmas has always been joyful for me. But it was all because of the people in my life.
Some people have not been so lucky. Maybe they didn't have the best childhood. Maybe they can't afford anything extravagant. Maybe this will be the first Christmas they will have without a loved one. Maybe it's not their first Christmas without that person, but it reminds them of how much they miss them.
Hamilton Wright Mabie said, "Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love."
As we go into what can be a difficult time for some of our friends and neighbors, let's not forget to share a little holiday cheer. Let's reach out to those who are going through a hard time. Visit with that elderly neighbor. Bake some cookies for someone who is lonely. Invite someone out who doesn't get asked to go out very often. Give a gift to someone who may not receive much this year. Most of the best gifts don't cost money. It's a kind word. It's an invitation. It's a quick visit. It's a small act of kindness. Let's all do our part in this "conspiracy of love."
Challenge for the week: Share some holiday cheer!

Gorilla Gathering message for the week:
It's Thanksgiving week, which means it's time to think of all the things we have to be thankful for. And, although this is something we should be doing every day, it's nice to have a day dedicated to being grateful. I asked several students and staff this morning what they were thankful for. Here were their answers:
Deer hunting
Mashed potatoes
My house
My mom
Go-cart
Coffee creamer
Family
Puppies
Turkey
Lincoln Juracek
My kitten
And Grandma Trish bringing lunch.
All of these are wonderful things to be thankful for. And if I had the time, I'm sure I could make a list a mile long of things our staff and students are grateful for.
We, as a community, are so blessed it is sometimes beyond belief. A few years ago, I began choosing 3 things every day that made me happy. The goal was to write down 1,000 things that I was thankful for in a year. At first, it was hard. Then it became easier and easier. It turns out an attitude of gratitude is something you can train. And so I started seeing small things every day that made me smile, because those were the things I was looking for.
The difficult things to be thankful for are the tests in life. Those things that seem terrible on the surface.
Rumi said, "If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?"
Those difficult things are the things that make us who we are, they are the things that force us to develop, to grow, to improve. But it's hard to be thankful for them. So I asked our students and staff for some examples to share with you of bad things that you can still be thankful for. Here are some that they came up with:
I'm thankful for:
Sickness, because it means my immune system is working.
Sleepless nights, because it means I have many blessings to be worried about.
The sting on your face in really cold weather, because it makes you feel alive.
A setback at work, because it makes you feel better about when things go really well.
Injury, because it makes you appreciate being able to compete with your teammates.
Financial struggles, because they make you evaluate what's really important.
This Thanksgiving, take some time to think about the great things in your life. We are so blessed to live where we live, surrounded by this great community. But also take some time to think about those tests you are facing. Think about what blessings may come FROM those tests. Bonus points if you take the time to write them down!
Challenge for the week:
Be thankful; even for the tests in life!
Please feel free to share something you are thankful for in the comments, whether it's a blessing, or a test, or both!
Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Happy Thanksgiving! Have a grateful week and enjoy the time with family if you are fortunate enough to get the chance!

Gorilla Gathering message for the week:
It's hard to make friends. It doesn't matter if you are a begindergartener, or elderly. Finding good friends is difficult. Sometimes what happens, is we put our trust in people who have not earned it.
One person described it this way: Every time someone is trustworthy with a secret, they get a pretend marble in their jar. Every time they reach out when I'm having a hard time, they get another imaginary marble in their jar. Show up to help with a project? Another marble. There to offer condolences after a loss? Another marble. Show kindness to someone struggling? Another marble.
Too often, we try to make or keep friends that have simply not earned enough marbles.
On the other hand, have we ourselves done enough to earn our marbles? Do we show kindness? Do we reach out to those who are in a rough patch? Do we show up to help with projects for our friends? Are we trustworthy with confidential information?
Walter Winchell said, "A friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."
This week, take stock of the friends in your life. Be grateful for the friends with full marble jars! Don't waste your time or energy on "friends" with no marbles!
Then focus on getting some marbles added to your own jar. Reach out to someone who you know has a hard time around the holidays. Show kindness. Offer help, even if you're not asked.
Challenge for the week: Earn your own marbles AND pay attention to your friends' marbles!
