Gregory Team Qualifies for Q1073 Quiz Bowl Finals
By Ronda Graber
Gregory High School’s quiz bowl team will be competing in the finals this Saturday in Mitchell at the Q1073 Quiz Bowl. The team could win up to $1,000 for Gregory school.
Each year the Q1073 Radio Quiz Bowl is held and 32 teams compete. It is one way the KORN News Radio FM 101.3 and AM 1490, KORN Country FM 92.1, and Q1073 recognizes outstanding area students. Competition started in October over the telephone. When each school had a meet, they connected via telephone, and the first school to get three correct answers won. The final eight teams will meet up on Saturday at the Pepsi Cola Theatre of Performing Arts in Mitchell. Along with Gregory, Sanborn Central, Mount Vernon, Dakota Christian, Platte-Geddes, Menno, Mitchell, and Parker will be competing.
Gregory’s team consists of all seniors: Madisan Graber (captain), Dani Timanus, Dylan Johnson, Piper Bartlett (alternate), and Luke Barreto (alternate). They were chosen by the faculty of GHS in September. Their first meet was against Avon. Gregory won with a score of 4-3. Next Gregory took on Bon Homme and defeated them with a score of 3-1. Lastly, they beat Dakota Christian 3-1 to make it to the final eight teams. These meets were recorded and are posted on the website www.q107radio.com for your listening pleasure.
On Saturday, competition begins at 9:30 a.m. Gregory is scheduled for the second match against Mt. Vernon. Matches for the final eight will be longer than the others this season. To win the match, a team has to answer six questions correctly. The contest will be double elimination, and some teams in the final eight do have losses already, but Gregory does not.
All eight finishing schools will win prize money for their school: first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third and fourth places $250, and fifth through eighth places $100. This is the fourth time that Gregory has qualified for the final eight in the past eight years. Two years ago, Gregory won first place with GHS graduates Eli Barreto, Trey Murray, and Nathan Fortuna.

Happy new year! A new year means new beginnings. The days get longer (we gain 50 minutes of sunshine in January alone) and it always feels like we hit warp speed into spring and summer. It's that time of year when we all do a little self-reflection. We take a look at the last year and see all of the wonderful things that have happened, as well as some of those things we wished we could forget, depending on the year.
Every new year, people have resolutions. In our house this year, we all sat down and made 2026 goal bingo cards. We tried to have some things for our health, some things for our minds, and a couple of things we will do just for others. We make sure some goals are easy and we make sure some goals are more lofty. I encourage everyone to not only make some goals, but to make sure you write them down! Writing down a goal and putting it somewhere you can see it increases your chances of accomplishing the goal by a huge margin!
In previous Gorilla Gatherings at school, we have discussed setting goals. All good goals should be SMART.
S: Specific
M: Measurable
A: Attainable
R: Reasonable
T: Timely
Set a goal for different aspects of your life. Set one for health, finances, education, job, marriage, friends, service, church, etc. Any aspect of your life that is important to you can have a goal to help you improve that portion of your life. Make them achievable, but not too easy. Make it lofty, but not impossible. Then go to work each day trying to achieve that goal.
But here's the rub: you're going to fail. I say this, not because I don't believe in you, but because we are all human. We fail. It's what we do. We all will have a bad day where we don't make it to the gym. Or lose our temper and say a cross word to someone important to us. Or ruin our diet with a trip to the fast-food restaurant. It's important that we do not let these temporary set-backs become permanent.
Rita Moreno said, "You have to be able to get up and dust yourself off and always be going forward."
We need to be able to not let one day of failure become two. Give yourself a little bit of grace and move on. When, not if, we fail, we need to be able to get right back on the proverbial horse. If we fail one day, get right back onto your goal the next day. Good habits are not made in one day. And bad habits take time and patience to break.
Challenge for the week:
Get back up: Move forward.
Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Have a goal-driven week and may your new year be filled with blessings!

Tonights Boys Basketball game will be a Varsity only game with a 7:00pm start time in the Chamberlain school gym.

Your generosity and enthusiasm helped make the event a meaningful and memorable experience for our students. We are grateful for the time, donations, and positive energy you brought to this special day. Thank you for helping our kids feel celebrated and supported!

Pressure.
We all feel it. We all feel it different ways. Pressure seems to mount this time of year. Small children feel the pressure of concerts, mid-year testing, church program parts, and gift-giving. Middle and high school students feel the pressure of grades, concerts, sports, and semester tests. Adults feel pressure in different ways: Last-minute gifts, end of the year pressures for work, food preparation for the holidays, giving their kids a great holiday experience, and asking themselves where the money will be coming from for all of those things!
We all feel pressure in different ways this time of year, regardless of age. But there are ways to deal with pressure. Coach Jon Gruden said, "You either feel pressure, or apply pressure." What he means is that you can let the pressure get to you, or you can apply a little pressure of your own.
There are several ways we can "apply pressure:"
Plan out your study time for those finals.
Make a list of things you have to accomplish in order.
Write out your budget.
Spend a little time each evening memorizing your part in the play.
Wake up each morning and set up your day for success!
We can all "apply pressure" in our own way.
But. . .
We also want to be aware of how hard the holidays can be. We don't know if this is someone's first Christmas without a loved one. We don't know if it is quite possibly someone's LAST Christmas. We don't know if money is tight for people. Maybe there is a very sick person in their life. Maybe they are struggling with depression. We just don't ever really know what others may be going through.
The solution to this is grace. While we are out there applying pressure, we need to never lose the ability to give a little grace to our fellow man. Be ready to give a kind word, or a helping hand, or a word of encouragement. Show patience with people. Grant them a little grace, especially in their failings. We will all need someone to show each of us a little grace at some point in our lives. May we always be prepared to give grace generously.
So this week is a two-part challenge:
1. Get out there and apply some pressure.
2. Be ready to show some grace to those who may need it.
Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Have a graceful week! See you next year!
