Gorilla Gathering message for the week:
I drove a group of students for their field trip today, so we didn't have a Gorilla Gathering at school, but I thought I would share one with all of you!

Have you ever had one of those days? You know the kind I'm talking about. The days where nothing seems to go right? I had one of those days last Wednesday. Allow me to elaborate. It actually started on the evening before Wednesday.

First, the AC in my wife's car had gone out. I was not about to drive a black suburban 3 hours on a 90⁰ day. We had tickets to a really good comedian for Wednesday night in Sioux Falls. So we decided to take my red pickup. I changed the oil in my pickup and then checked the air filter. It looked like a whole family of mice had moved in! By now, the stores were closed and I couldn't get another one, so we went to plan C. My folks said we could use my dad's pickup. It gets good gas mileage and has never had any kind of issue.

The next day, I woke up late, which is a big no-no if you're a bus driver. I finally got out the door ten minutes later than I should have. Then the bus route didn't go well. It seemed like at each stop, I had to wait longer than normal. Kids were extra feisty that day as well. When I finally got to school, it was anything but a normal day. There was one problem after another.

All this, I decided, didn't matter because I was going to go see the comedian that night in Sioux Falls. The next day, I had requested a personal day so there would be no rush coming home. I had looked forward to this for a long time and I was not going to let a bad day ruin my experience!

So when school got out and we loaded up to head east, I thought my day was looking up.

I. Was. Wrong.

We were making good time. Even though we were fighting the 45 mph wind and traffic. It looked like we would even have time to get something to eat before-hand. We ordered a pizza from the place attached to our hotel, to be picked up at 6:05. The show was at 7:00, so this should give us plenty of time.

That's when the pickup died.

Dead on the interstate going 80 mph. I pulled over and tried the engine. Nothing. We sat there for a couple minutes problem-solving. We ran through possible solutions. I tried it again. Success! We were off again!. . . . . .for about 15 minutes.

The pickup proceeded to die 4 or 5 more times. We finally got there by slowing down to 60mph. We pulled in the parking lot at 6:10. I went to get our pizza while my wife went to change. I waited. And waited. And waited. At 6:30, Jenny came down and waited while I got ready. She didn't come to the room with the pizza until 6:50. And the pizza was cold. We should have left for the show at least 15 minutes earlier.

In the end, it didn't matter. The stress, the worrying, the planning, the panic. None of it made any difference. The show started late, so we didn't miss anything. It was an awesome show! We laughed a lot! But the bad day before stopped mattering.

I had someone tell me one time, "Don't let a bad five minutes ruin a perfectly good day!"

So much of the time, we let bad circumstances ruin our attitude. It makes us crabby, gives us a short fuse, and ruins otherwise nice experiences.

The next time you're having "one of those days" take a minute to look around. Take stock of your blessings. Be thankful for the people around you. Be thankful for the chance to show some grace in a bad situation.

At the very least, you'll have a very funny story to share with your friends on the internet!🤣

Challenge for the week: when you're having a bad day, take a step back and look for great things! You'll find them if you look!

Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla! (Even "those days")

Have a great week!

Gorilla Gathering message for the week:

I saw a video this weekend of a marathon runner. He was winning the race by a LONG way. He came around the final corner and was in the lead by at least 100 yards. As he got closer to the finish line, he slowed down. He raised his hands in triumph. He clapped and smiled. He even took the time to give a few high-fives.

Far off in the distance you see another man come around the last corner. But this man is in a full-out sprint! He is running for all he is worth! At the very last second, the second man overtakes the first and wins the race!

You see the same thing in the NFL EVERY year. Someone breaks a run and walks into the end zone, only to get caught by a defender or drop the ball too early because they started celebrating too soon.

There's an old expression that says, "The temptation to quit will be the greatest just before you are about to succeed."

With only 4 weeks of school left, there is always the temptation to let some of our responsibilities slide. This is true for teachers AND students. I imagine it's true for everyone when it comes to summer or projects or some other finish point.

It's easy to let grades slip the last few weeks. It's easy to not finish a project very well, even if you've been working very hard on it for a while. We all just want to settle for, "That's good enough!" We just want to get to the next thing.

I urged our students and faculty, and I urge all of you reading this: Stay the course! Finish the school year strong! Don't fall into the temptation to just "slide by." Your future self will thank you for a job well-done! Stay on top of your grades, responsibilities, sports, music, and tasks, all the way through to the end!

Challenge for the week: Stay the course! Finish strong!

Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Have a wonderful week and enjoy the warm weather!

Gorilla Gathering message for the week:

I really enjoy reading. I am normally a thriller or fantasy book reader. I enjoy being carried away to another place. Nonfiction has always seemed too dry for me. But I recently saw someone I know recommend a book. And since I usually share similar interests with this person, I decided to give it a try. I absolutely loved it! It was outside my comfort zone, but I found myself researching the topic on my own! (Ask me anything about the Edmund Fitzgerald 😁)

I have had the opportunity to see some pretty remarkable things over the last few weeks. I have seen kids go out for a play for the first time. I have seen them try a new sport like track or golf for the first time. I have seen them sign up for a piano or vocal solo for the first time. All of these actions required students to step outside their comfort zones. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself in front of people and perform, but they did it all the same. It's a VERY important skill for our students to be able to stand in front of people and perform, speak, and compete. We expect them to be future leaders someday, and that will require them to share their knowledge with others.

Neale Donald Walsch said, "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."

If we never try anything new or outside our comfort zone, we may miss out on some really great experiences! There might be a new hobby or passion out there, just waiting to be discovered. There might be whole new groups of people you've never connected with.

Let's take the opportunity this week to try something new. Find something that's outside your comfort zone. Something that scares you just a little. The possibilities are endless:
Sign up for a class.
Try a new kind of book.
A crazy recipe.
Offer to speak for your work.
Join a community play.
Take on a new responsibility.
Join a new group.

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!

Challenge: Try something new or scary.

Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!

Have a wonderful week!
