Gorilla Gathering message for the week:

Finish this sentence:
I can't wait until ___________.

We all have something we just can't wait for. I asked several faculty and students that question last week. Here were some of their answers:
My kids are out of college.
Friday.
Spring/summer break.
Graduation.
Recess.
For the carnival to get here.
My new house to be done.
For my kids to be potty trained.
This injury to be healed up.
My new hot tub.
For my cup of coffee.

When I was in college, I worked two different jobs. I was a short-order cook at the student union during the week, and on Friday and Saturday nights I worked as a valet at a casino in Deadwood. I enjoyed both, but as a valet, I got to work with a couple of guys that were my age, as well as a couple of older gentleman.
(I highly recommend getting some friends who are quite a bit older or younger than yourself! They have a great deal of wisdom and advice to share that you would miss out on otherwise.)
One night, we were talking about the things we just couldn't wait for. I said I couldn't wait until student teaching was done. Another guy said he just couldn't wait until graduation. Both of us couldn't wait until we were finally married. We both just wanted to get to that NEXT stage of life.

That's when my older friend spoke up. He said, "You better be careful with that. If you're always waiting for the next thing, you may forget to stop and appreciate what you have right now! I enjoy getting to come and visit with you boys every weekend. I enjoy our time together!"

He was right. Sometimes we spend so much time waiting for that NEXT thing, we forget to stop and appreciate what we have now.

Robert Brault said, "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."

We are living in "the good ol' days" right now. This week, take some time to appreciate those little things. Be thankful for those daily relationships. Maybe it's the people you get to work with. Maybe it's the students you get to see every day. Maybe its the people you work with on a charity board. Maybe it's the time you get with your own family. Maybe it's the other students in your class that you only get so many years with. Either way, take a moment and appreciate those daily relationships we are so lucky to have. Don't focus on the grind. Focus on the relationships!

Challenge for the week: focus on those daily relationships!

Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Have a meaningful week!

Gorilla Gathering message for the week:

We are hard on ourselves. We often expect more from ourselves than we really should. It's easy to look at other people and the things they have accomplished and feel inadequate about our own achievements.

People often share cool quotes with me. Which is great! I'm always looking for inspiration and for motivational quotes, so it's nice to have a bunch of them in the hopper, ready to be used. Mrs. Kristen Jacobsen sent a quote to me about a week ago that speaks to how we compare ourselves to others.

"Dead Last Finish is better than Did Not Finish which trumps Did Not Start."

What a great way to look at things! For example; if you run 3 miles a day, but run REALLY slow, you're still RUNNING! That beats everyone who is at home sitting on the couch! If you have ever finished a half marathon, you are in a group that consists of less than 1% of the world's population. They don't ask if you ran fast. They don't ask if you ran the entire thing. This is just if you FINISHED!

Too often, we get caught up comparing ourselves to the accomplishments of others. Maybe it's time to just compare ourselves to yesterday's version of us. If you have a goal, whether it's fitness, financial, academic, or other, the hardest thing to do is START. The most difficult trip to the gym is the 1st trip. The hardest part of every journey is the first step! So go ahead and start! And if you've already started, keep grinding! Even if your progress is slow! See where you are in a month or year! You might be surprised!

Challenge for the week:

Start. . . . Then keep grinding!

Every day is a great day to be a Gorilla!
Have a terrific week!
