Our high school track team participated in the Annual Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run. This event features Law Enforcement officers serving as “Guardian of the Flame” as they carry the “Flame of Hope” through our communities. This tradition raises vital funds and awareness for our athletes while advocating for a culture of inclusion through South Dakota.
Spikers are hosting a youth camp this summer! Grades 2nd to 7th are welcome, return their registration form to the school office this week.
Gregory takes 90 Entries to Grade Band Contest
On Friday, May 8th, the Gregory 5th-8th grade band students participated in the area instrumental solo music contest at Winner. Gregory had a total of 14 I+’s, 54 I’s, 12 I-‘s, 6 II+’s, 3 II’s, and 1 II- for a total of 90 entries
Students prepared their solos over the last three months and had an opportunity to play for an audience and a judge to receive comments on how to improve as musicians and things they do well. “I was very happy with many of the judge’s comments and with the student performances. It is always a good experience to have the students play solos in front of an audience. It really makes them grow as musicians and individuals.
Thank you to both my wife Katie and Colleen Murray for helping throughout the day and for their piano playing skills!

Last Gorilla Gathering message for the school year:
The first and last Gorilla Gathering of each year is always about legacy. Your legacy is what you leave behind and what you're remembered for accomplishing. We ALL are leaving a legacy, whether we mean to or not. People will remember things about us. Yes, they may remember the things we accomplished and the accolades we've acquired. But more than anything, people remember how they FEEL when they're around you.
My favorite example of this is the late Mr. James Larkin. He was a great math teacher. He was a very good class advisor. Later on in my life, he was a wonderful mentor and coworker. But the thing I remember most about him was how he made people feel. He always made you feel loved and appreciated. I doubt you can find a person who would say anything other than that he was kind, compassionate, joyful, and a servant-leader. He left a legacy of loving others and putting their needs before his own.
Vitor Belfort was one of the first multi-weightclass champions in the UFC. He said, "Legacy is not what I did for myself. It's what I'm doing for the next generation."
As this graduating class goes out into the real world, and as we go out into our day-to-day lives, I would encourage you to consider your legacy.
You may: win championships.
Be the first trillionaire.
Invent a longer lasting lightbulb.
Cure a disease.
Be the president.
Become a doctor or lawyer.
Live in a penthouse in New York City.
Or live a quiet life in a small town.
Whatever ELSE you may accomplish, make sure you leave a legacy that puts OTHERS first. No matter what other accolades you collect, make sure you leave a legacy of kindness, compassion, service, and joy.

Due to the upcoming elementary remodeling project and having to begin moving classrooms, the elementary awards program has been canceled for this year. The Share Fair will still go on as scheduled, Thursday, May 14th, beginning at 2:00 PM in the individual elementary classrooms. Gorilla Gathering message for the week:
Problems. We all have them. Some are big. Some are small. But for whatever reason, we always think OUR problems are bigger than anyone else's. It's easy to fall into the mindset of worrying about our problems. The more we think about them, the worse they seem. . . .at least to us.
I look at a lot of quotes, specifically because I am always looking for good quotes and ideas for Gorilla Gatherings. So it takes a pretty profound thought to really knock my socks off. I was scrolling through Facebook the other day and I saw one that really made me stop. It said,
"If the whole world wrote down their problems and put them in a hat, would you risk taking a random problem from the hat, or would you just stick with your own?"
Woofta. If I'm being honest, there is NO WAY I take a chance at drawing someone else's problem. It could be starvation, war, loss of a loved one, health problems, or WORSE! This is not meant to diminish the problems you may be facing. Some of them may be very serious. But it does force you to consider whether the thing you are worrying about is really a big deal or not.
Most of the time, the things we worry about are not nearly as important as we think they are. Most of the time, we can't even remember what it was that was worrying us even a week ago. Think about it. What was it that you were so worried about last week? Last month? Last year? Chances are, if you can even remember what it was, it has passed and is no longer a big deal. There are SOME problems that we never get over, but even those problems can help us grow and change.
This week, take a moment to put your problems in perspective. Are they really that big of a deal? If not, smile and move on. If they are a big deal, reach out to friends and loved ones and be willing to take help and support!
Challenge for the week: Keep things in perspective. Our problems are not that serious.

Last night we honored all junior and senior NHS members. New members received their pin and certificate; seniors received their tassel and certificate.
