Responsibility. . . . .I can hear the groan from here.🤣 Any time someone starts talking about responsibility, the listener groans. We, as humans, associate responsibility with just another thing that we HAVE to do or take care of. One more thing to take up our time and effort.
I would argue that we are looking at responsibility all wrong. Responsibility is what gives our lives purpose and meaning. Responsibility is our reason to get out of bed. Our reason to strive for better things.
Winston Churchill said, "The price of greatness is responsibility."
Those things we are responsible for are blessings. They are the things that give us purpose, hope, and joy.
I told our students and staff this morning that each one of us can do SOMETHING to be more responsible. Our young ones can ask to be responsible for something simple like doing the dishes, or picking up toys, or feeding a pet. Even the adults in the room can be more responsible. They can join an organization. If they are already in several organizations, they can consider taking a leadership role like secretary or treasurer or even president.
This week I want each of us to find a way to take a little more responsibility upon ourselves. If you aren't a part of any organizations, I would encourage you to join one! We have a TON of worthy organizations in our little community doing great things for our town. If you need ideas, please reach out!

My name is Mark, and I'm a Christmas junkie. The first step is admitting I have a problem.
I LOVE the holidays. I like every single part of it. The family, the food, the gift giving, the music, the snow. . . .ALL of it. I look forward to the traditions. I love the traditional Thanksgiving foods; the turkey, the stuffing, the gravy, etc. I start listening to Christmas music by mid-October at the latest. (Sorry Scrooges) Our family always has Pizza Hut pizza on Christmas Eve after our church Christmas program, and I look forward to that.
But the part of the holidays that makes them so magical is the people. Growing up, my grandma would come and open gifts with us and make her rounds to the other cousins' houses. My siblings and I would play with our new presents together on Christmas day. Everything smelled like peppermint and turkey and joy!
Now, I get to watch my kids open gifts and see the joy in their faces. I get to be the dad with the pocket knife and the bag of trash as people open gifts. Christmas has always been joyful for me. But it was all because of the people in my life.
Some people have not been so lucky. Maybe they didn't have the best childhood. Maybe they can't afford anything extravagant. Maybe this will be the first Christmas they will have without a loved one. Maybe it's not their first Christmas without that person, but it reminds them of how much they miss them.
Hamilton Wright Mabie said, "Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love."
As we go into what can be a difficult time for some of our friends and neighbors, let's not forget to share a little holiday cheer. Let's reach out to those who are going through a hard time. Visit with that elderly neighbor. Bake some cookies for someone who is lonely. Invite someone out who doesn't get asked to go out very often. Give a gift to someone who may not receive much this year. Most of the best gifts don't cost money. It's a kind word. It's an invitation. It's a quick visit. It's a small act of kindness. Let's all do our part in this "conspiracy of love."
